A circular saw is the main tool for a briar wood cutter.
Usually the cutter starts cutting the briar root by the middle. Then, he only needs a glance to see what areas of the root are suitable to be cut in briar blocks. The first option is always to cut a plateaux, but unfortunately only a small percentage of briar roots are good enough to get plateaux from them.

The core of the briar root must be always avoided.
You never know what you will find inside a briar root until you cut it. There can be small stones, sand, insects, woodworm... All this must be avoided by the cutter in order to get flawless briar blocks. It is also important to cut away the origins of the root branches which are bad quality wood and very often break the briar block when drying.

Being a briar wood cutter is a hard and dangerous job. A cutter must always be focused on what he is doing. Almost everyone has sometime got cut by the saw, and not few have lost a finger.

The briar wood is dense and strong. Some roots are very big and difficult to manage. Stones often are a fatal trap. The cutter has to push more than usual and when the stone finally yields if you are not experienced your hands can easily end up on the circular saw.
